ChaseLight

Privacy Policy - Last updated 18 October 2026

This policy describes how ChaseLight, a photography shoot-planning app, handles information when you use it.

What ChaseLight collects

Location. When you search for a location or use your device's current location, that location is used to fetch sunrise, sunset, moon, weather, and place data for that spot. ChaseLight has no accounts and does not keep your location in any database we control. Requests pass through our hosting provider (Netlify) on their way to the services listed below.

Plan My Drive (Premium). If you use Plan My Drive, your device's current location is sent - together with the location you're planning to shoot at - to Google's Directions service to calculate drive time. This only happens when you explicitly tap Calculate; opening an event never triggers it. It is not stored on any server we control.

Saved locations and saved chases. Any location or shoot you save stays entirely on your own device, in the app's local storage. It is never transmitted to or stored on any server we control.

Notifications. If you turn on notifications, ChaseLight schedules them locally on your device for your saved chases and Next Chase Alert. The notifications themselves are created and delivered on your device - nothing is sent to us or anyone else to deliver them. To work out Next Chase Alert, ChaseLight checks the forecast for your saved locations, including in the background while the app is closed. Those checks send each saved location's coordinates to our weather service in the same way as when you open the app.

Share Your Chase. If you choose a photo to create a shareable image, your device's own photo picker gives ChaseLight only the specific photo you select - we never get broader access to your photo library. The image is composed on your device and handed directly to Instagram or your device's share sheet; it is not uploaded to or stored on any server we control.

Scout (nearby places, maps and AI summaries). Scout looks up nearby parking, cafes, walking paths and public toilets using the coordinates of the spot you chose, from Google. Interactive maps and street-level imagery are provided by Google; when you open a map, Google loads it directly to your device and so receives your device's IP address and the area you view. For AI Scout summaries (Premium), only the name of the place you chose - with its suburb, city, state and country - is sent to Google Gemini. Coordinates and device identifiers are not.

Feedback. If you use the in-app feedback form, we receive the message you write and, if you choose to include one, an email address to reply to.

Subscription and purchase information. If you subscribe to ChaseLight Premium, purchase and subscription status is handled by RevenueCat together with Apple's and Google's own purchase systems. We do not directly receive or store your payment details.

Crash and error diagnostics. If the app encounters an error, technical details about what happened - device and operating system information, the app version, and a short trail of recent in-app activity - are sent to Sentry, a crash-reporting service, to help us find and fix problems. This can include the name of the place you were viewing, but not its coordinates. It never includes your name or an account (ChaseLight has no accounts). Sentry is set not to collect IP addresses, cookies, other request headers or user details.

Abuse prevention. To stop automated misuse of our servers, they keep simple request counters, identified by your IP address (or, for AI Scout, by an anonymous subscription identifier). A counter holds only a number of requests - not your location or anything you searched for.

Third parties involved

Each of these receives only the specific information needed to perform its function - for example, a location you search is sent to fetch weather for that spot, nothing more.

How long we keep information, and how to have it removed

Saved locations and saved chases live only on your own device. You're already in full control of this data - clearing it, or removing it, is done through the app's own Settings (Data & Privacy lets you clear saved locations, saved chases, recent searches and cached forecast data), or by uninstalling the app.

Crash reports are kept by Sentry for a limited period under its own retention settings. The request counters described above hold only a number and no location.

Feedback messages, since they land in an inbox we control, are the one thing you may need to ask us to delete. Contact us using the details below and we'll remove it.

Children's privacy

ChaseLight is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
